MICHAELMAS 29th, September

The feast of St. Michael and All angels. St. Michael was not a saint but an angel and you can read about him and his glorious battle against Satan in Revelation, Chapter XII. He is the protector of people fighting against evil and one of the patron saints of soldiers, often linked with St. George because they both fought dragons.

Michaelmas used to be celebrated as a holiday and was the day of the annual Hiring Fair, when people put themselves up for hire to farmers looking for hands or householders looking for servants for the coming year. Country towns like Bunbury were busy and noisy on that day! Papers were signed -some with a mark - money changed hands, bargains were struck and for many a new life began - at least for the next year.
