125 Years and still going strong

The largest women's organisation in the world is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. It is, of course, the Mothers' Union.

Founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, the Mothers' Union has grown over the years. A lot of its work is with people in poorer coun- tries, especially during natural disasters. In the Chester diocese, help is given to mothers in Styal Prison and holidays are provided for families who are under stress.

The Bunbury branch has, we believe, been in existence for nearly 100 years. It would give us hope for the future if some younger members of our church joined us, possibly forming a Young Wives Group.

To celebrate our anniversary, the Queen attended a joyful service at Westminster Abbey on the 7th, June. Her message on the service sheet read: "As Patron of the Mothers' Union, I am proud that for 125 years it has served God in supporting family life. Mary Sumner's vision now reaches around the world. I pay tribute to the strong faith of the members and the community- based work around the world which char- acterise the Mothers' Union of today."

Our church in Bunbury is lucky to have so many young families, joining in regularly in worship especially at the 9.30 services.

The Mothers' Union - or perhaps even better the Young Wives' Fellowship - is for you!

You don't have to be a mother; you don't have to be a wife; you don't even have to be a woman! Membership is for everyone who believes in the organisation's principles.

Aim and Objects

The Mothers' Union is a world-wide society whose aim is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.

There are five objects:
1. To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.
2. To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the church.
3. To maintain a world-wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
4. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
5. To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

The Mothers' Union Prayer

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who gave marriage to be a source of blessing, we thank you for family life with all its joys and sorrows. May we know your presence and peace in our homes. Fill them with your love and use them to your glory. Bless all who are married and every parent and child. Pour out upon us your Holy Spirit, that we may truly love and serve you.

Bless the members of the Mothers' Union throughout the world, unite us in prayer and worship, in love and service, that, streng- thened by your grace, we may seek to do your will.

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen

If there is anyone out there who would like to have a go at getting some of the young mums (and dads) together in a Young Parents' Group, contact the Vicar or Cynthia Fowles. It's a serious organisation that can be a lot of fun. It's all up to you!
