Some Calveley Readers

who read with great interest the article on their church in the last “Parish Link” have told me that it brought back for them very vivid memories of one particular man closely associated with the church’s most recent years.

That man was, of course, the late Mr. Denys Crowther, who died last November and whose Obituary appeared in the Mid-December “Link”, and whose ashes were interred at Calveley on May 25th this year.

Officially, Denys was Calveley’s Treasurer for a number of years. In practice, though, he was much more than just that. As John wrote in December, “Denys was always the first person to welcome those who attended Calveley Church.

When not attending to his Sunday duties, he spent much time looking after the church and its grounds.”  If any problem arose, be it structural, financial or organisational, Denys was the man to whom we all turned for guidance. Invariably, he was the one who provided the answer that had eluded the rest of us.

The large amount of repair and refurbishment work undertaken by Community Services was the result of his inspiration and efforts. In the process, he saved hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds in expenditure for Calveley Church Committee.

I believe I can claim to be the one who first bestowed on Denys the title of “Mr. Calveley.” He will be remembered by many for years to come as a part of the ongoing story of Calveley Church.
