The Millennium
 Why Celebrate?

Of course, the answer we give is that some 2,000 years ago God came to earth in the person of Jesus. Jesus who, himself without sin, took our sin as if it was his own, died on a cross and rose again so that all who trust and follow him can find forgiveness and friendship with God. In his time on earth, Jesus changed lives and because he is alive today he is still changing lives as he has over the centuries.

Over the past 2,000 years many men and women, great and small, have had a lasting influence for good on the life of our nation as well as other nations. Whilst not all of these people would claim to be deeply religious many have been inspired by the Christian faith and committed themselves to Christ. Sadly too there are some things which have been done in the name of Christianity which we find disgraceful, even abhorrent.

Nonetheless, we can be thankful for and indeed celebrate the good heritage left to us in many facets of our lives by those whose lives were changed by Christ. Hospitals, education, social reform, science - the influence of Christians in these and other areas gives us good cause to celebrate.

During the next few months I will attempt to capture something of that influence in some of these areas.
