Disappointing Easter Eggs

 

Easter Eggs are such a disappointment - don't you think? Now, don't get me wrong or get carried away with my statement to the extent that no one buys me one - but they can be a bit of a let down. They look so inviting, so promising. They come in big boxes - always a good sign. They're bright and colourful with glittering foil wrappers. They're made of chocolate, which must be a good thing, and the packages tell us that they are full to bursting with our favourite sweets, hundreds of Smarties or Chocolate Buttons or Milk Tray.

 

It's great when you line them up on Easter Day - comparing the boxes, trying to decide which one to open first and which to save to last. Some people have amazing discipline and seem to be nibbling away for weeks after Easter. Others have finished the lot well before Easter Monday dawns. But when you break into that first box, when you start to unlock its promised treasures - that's when the disappointment begins.

 

You thought you had enough Chocolate Buttons to reach the moon. You actually get a little plastic packet with 12 - and 6 of those are broken. You thought, from the size of the box, that the egg would be the size of a football. In fact it's more like a deflated tennis ball. You imagine that the amount of chocolate in the egg must be enough to sink a battleship. Once you break it into bite-sized pieces, you realise it's not much more than in a Mars bar. Never mind, it still tastes good and after all, you've still got three more eggs to go!

 

Jesus is so different. With Jesus you get far more than you expect, not far less. In becoming a man, He showed that he was one with us. In dying for our sins, He showed us a love beyond measure. In rising again on Easter morning, He showed us His eternal presence. Jesus is here now. He is waiting for our call. He promises us eternal life if we turn to Him and seek His forgiveness. There is nothing hollow in this Easter gift. It doesn't come in fancy packaging - and it won't be gone on Monday morning.
