GAMES CHILDREN PLAY

KOYA- a game from India for four or five players

This game is traditionally played with mango seeds, but pebbles could be used instead.

Mark out one larger box and one small box next to it as in the diagram, and a line some way back for people to stand behind. The boxes need to be small enough and sufficiently far away to make the game a challenge.

Place one pebble in the small box, and a dozen or so in the larger box. The aim is to collect as many pebbles as possible.

Each player throws a pebble to decide who goes first: the person whose pebble lands closest to the small box starts.

Players take it in turns to throw a pebble, aiming either to hit a pebble in the big box, which they then collect, or to hit the pebble in the small box. Whoever hits the pebble in the small box collects all the pebbles and wins. Otherwise, the winner is the player who collects the most pebbles.
