Mothers' Union in Demand

The Home Secretary has asked the Mothers' Union to help the Government in its struggle to support teenage mothers and single parent families.

The 120 year old Christian body, originally for married women, now accepts single women and men as members, runs 38 parenting courses and 10 contact centres for separated parents to meet their children.

Mr. Straw wants the M.U. to increase its services and expand its programme for helping teenage mothers to continue their schooling, by caring for their babies. His request is a boost for the Mothers' Union which is trying to shake off its 'mumsy' image and establish recognition as a serious and effective charity.

Lady Eames, the world-wide President of the Union, said, "The Mothers' Union is not about jam and tea and cakes; it is about issues and about making a significant difference in people's lives."
