Stop Press - 9-15th May - Christian Aid Week

Christian Aid works on behalf of 40 Christian denominations in the U.K. and Ireland. This well known Christian charity funds numerous projects in the Third World to help people to improve their own lives and to tackle the causes of poverty and injustice.

Christian Aid helps the poorest and neediest people to become self-sufficient by:

* first of all listening to people talking about the causes of poverty and working with them and others to improve their lives.
(To take one recent example close to home, last year in response to calls from all over the Third World, many thousands of Christian Aid supporters went to lobby world leaders on this matter at the G8 summit in Birmingham. As a result, the exceptional problem of chronic poverty caused by International debt in the Third World is now at last being seriously addressed by influential governments).
* providing seeds and tools so that families can grow enough to eat
* building new wells to provide safe, clean water
* paying for emergency aid in times of crisis.

Christian Aid was one of the first charities to hold a house-to-house collection. An amazing 70,000 people volunteer each year to be collectors. Last year Christian Aid Week raised £9.5 million in Britain and in Eire. Each year we in Bunbury and Tilstone Fearnall manage to contribute hundreds of pounds during the Week.

This year there is reason to have even more confidence in Christian Aid's work: we should be encouraged to give more than ever.
